Grain in the days of digital is either applied with a filter or by turning up the gain on the sensor. With increasingly new sensors the noise they produce at higher ISO settings is reduced so in order to increase the affect you need an older camera or to use a digital filter. These pictures were taken on a stormy day in Mojacar Spain and increasing the camera ISO settings helped to heighten the sense of bad weather and give the pictures a textured feel. The cactus below was also shot at the same time at given the same treatment. As a stylistic tool grain or noise can add to the atmosphere of a photograph and add a style all of its own.
