Project 16 - Dusk

 

The above shot of the car bonnet clearly demonstrates the graduated smooth tonal range of a nearly cloudless dusk lit scene.


Classic dusk shots below show the back lit silhouettes with orange at the near the horizon going to the blue above with a wide angle shot. This graduated effect is severely limited with the use of a telephoto. The half cloud covered picture  demonstrates the lighting effect on cloud as well as a nearly clear sky. Bracketing exposure is worthwhile to achieve the effect you desire and this is demonstrated below, from +2 stops to -2 stops in 1 stop increments. The bottom 3 pictures show my chosen crop and exposure and the very bottom shows the effect of using a telephoto and the diminishing graduated effect on the sky due to its smaller angle of view.
